San Antonio Texas Welcome to Lackland Air Force Base located in the southwest area of San Antonio, Texas. Dating back to July 4, 1942 when the war department separated it from Kelley Field, Lackland AFB is currently home to over 120 units that have their own unique honors and histories. Thirty-six of those units are assigned to the 37th Training Wing, which is the largest training wing in the Air Force. It provides basic military, professional and technical skills, and English language training for the Air Force, other military services, government agencies, and allies. Another twenty-two units make up Air Reserve Command’s 433d Airlift Wing. There are eighteen Air Combat Command units stationed at Lackland under the Air Intelligence Agency and the 67th Intelligence Operations Wing. The remaining units are within Wilford Hall Medical Center (59th Medical Wing, the Air Force's largest medical facility, provides complete medical care to military healthcare beneficiaries in the United States as well as specialized care to patients referred from all over the world. Known as the Gateway to the Air Force, Lackland Air Force Base conducts the Air Force's only enlisted recruit basic military training program, ensuring orderly transition from civilian to military life. Recruits are trained in the fundamental skills necessary to be successful Airmen. This training includes basic war skills, military discipline, physical fitness, drill and ceremonies, Air Force core values and a comprehensive range of subjects relating to Air Force life. How do I get to Lackland Air Force Base? When driving to Lackland, you will be arriving on four major roads: I-10/Hwy 90, Hwy 281, I-37, or I-35. There are two main gates with Visitors Centers: The Gateway East Gate and Airman's Gate.
